On just the second day of the new school year, students from Olivet Academy NYC embarked on a memorable field trip to Hamilton Grange National Memorial, the historic home of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Nestled in the heart of Harlem, this visit brought American history to life in a vivid and unforgettable way.

Accompanied by their homeroom teacher, Ms. Elizabeth, program director Ms. Sylvie, and dedicated volunteer, Ms. Lucy, the students enjoyed not only a beautiful, sunny day but also a deep dive into the early days of the United States. The perfect weather set the tone for an energetic and insightful experience outside the classroom.

The tour was led by Mr. Craig, an engaging and knowledgeable docent as well as a park ranger whose storytelling captivated both students and adults alike. With a passion for history and a gift for bringing the past to life, Mr. Craig shared in-depth stories about Alexander Hamilton’s life—from his humble beginnings to his central role in shaping the U.S. financial system. He also discussed key historical figures including President George Washington, Aaron Burr, and Hamilton’s beloved wife, Elizabeth Hamilton.

Students were especially intrigued by the tales surrounding the infamous duel between Hamilton and Burr, as well as the lesser-known personal and political challenges Hamilton faced throughout his life. Mr. Craig also shed light on the broader context of New York State’s role in the nation's founding, enriching the students’ understanding of the place they call home.

Curious and engaged, the students asked thoughtful questions throughout the visit, making it a lively and interactive experience. Their enthusiasm turned the field trip into more than just a history lesson—it became a meaningful exploration of identity, legacy, and the roots of American democracy.

“It was such a special day,” said Ms. Sylvie. “Seeing the students connect so deeply with our nation’s history, right here in New York City, was incredibly rewarding.”

Thanks to the warmth of the weather, the support of caring adults like Ms. Lucy, and the unforgettable storytelling of Mr. Craig, the trip to Hamilton Grange was a resounding success. It not only deepened students’ appreciation of the past but also set a joyful and inspired tone for the year ahead.
